Infinity Ward Art Director explains why optical zoom in Modern Warfare no longer has black borders

Infinity Ward’s Art Director has responded to a user on Reddit that asked why Infinity Ward has gone back to the style similar to Call of Duty: Ghosts were aiming down sights using an optical zoom with snipers no longer has black borders but rather showcases some awareness of the surroundings.

As seen in gameplay of the Gunfight 2v2 mode in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, optical zoom with snipers did not have black borders but rather showcased actual surroundings. This is natural peripheral awareness that Infinity Ward is bringing as they aim to make this a realistic Call of Duty title.

Infinity Ward Art Director also noted that in Ghosts the technique used was not a natural method but picture-in-picture style to avoid excessive strain on the older engine used in that title.

But with the new engine in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, they are able to achieve a more natural, realistic magnification without too much strain on the engine.

Here’s the full response:

The blacked out sections of our optics always bothered me. We had to do it that way because we had to achieve magnification by physically pushing the camera out to the target. It wasn’t a true optical zoom. The blacked out parts of the screen were not only unrealistic but took away peripheral awareness. In reality even with one eye closed you still get peripheral awareness and can pick up movement on your sides while focusing on the site picture. What you are seeing in MW is an actual optical magnification. All of our powered optics use the technique. Its usually something that has to be reserved for beasty PCs. This was done in Ghosts but used a picture on picture technique that came at a heavy cost on the renderer. It was basically rendering the screen twice and the second picture was lower fidelity. We completely rebuilt this for MW so we could achieve the realistic effect and not tax our engine. The result is totally badass and gives purpose to the deep bench of optics in gunsmith. Our optics have realistic purpose and usages for various situations and missions.

Infinity Ward says certain character face models have already been ‘fixed’ in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare

Some users on Reddit have pointed out that certain character models and assets in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare’s gameplay build showcased during the Gunfight reveal stream looked sort-of out of line with lower graphic res on each character.

A user posted an image of the execution in the Gunfight mode stating, “This face looks like an over edited instagram model without pores. Please tell me this will be better. The rest looks like a great game but damn where are the details?

Infinity Ward’s Studio Art Director Joel Emslie already has commented on the Reddit post stating that this has “already been fixed today” and that artists at the studio were upset that they could not get it ready for the build that was shown on stream.

We are integrating the last round of heads for these bodies. You’re completely right to point this out. Trust me it was killing the character artists that it got into the build that way. They are total perfectionists 🙂 It’s already been fixed today.

Infinity Ward developer says Modern Warfare ‘definitely’ has ‘traditional’ MP, Gunfight only ‘taste’ of full experience

Users on social platforms yesterday were upset after just seeing gameplay for only a single mode in the entire Modern Warfare MP experience about what it holds for the entire MP experience.

Some users compared the game’s style to Rainbow 6, while others saw no connection between Rainbow 6 and Modern Warfare gameplay. The graphics overall are a leap forward for the franchise, but the Twitch stream was capped at 900p limiting the full extent of what could be showcased.

One thing that is clear, however, is that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare will change up multiplayer experience for Call of Duty by bringing a slower, more tactical gameplay focus to the franchise versus all run and gun style gameplay only. That’s the impression we also got of the gameplay when we payed at Infinity Ward.

The game enables a wide variety of play styles that were not easily achievable in other Call of Duty titles because of the intense, fast paced action all the time. It’s about giving player choices in many ways.

In response to a fan question about where’s traditional experiences, Infinity Ward’s Co-Design Director Joe Cecot has stated that there will be ‘traditional’ MP experiences in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.

The full MP experience is set to be revealed on Thursday, August 1 at 10AM PT, where we will get details on all of the aspects of the multiplayer universe in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is available October 25 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Multiplayer Gunfight 2v2 Mode Revealed — Details and Impressions

During a Twitch stream today, popular content creators revealed a first look at the brand new Gunfight mode coming to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare MP this October 25.

Back in late May, during our trip to Infinity Ward, we had a chance to see and also play the new Gunfight mode in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.

In this post, we’re breaking down the exact details on how the Gunfight mode works in MP and some of our impressions of this mode after playing it.

Gunfight Mode Details

Here’s the rundown of how Gunfight works in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare:

  • Gunfight is only 2v2
  • Gunfight features specially designed maps for this mode only. Three maps have been shown today:
    • King: Interior of warehouse
    • Pine: Dense Forest
    • Stack: Desert Container Yard
  • There is no create a class in the Gunfight mode.
  • The load outs are set for each player, and the load outs that players play with change every 2 rounds.
  • There is 6 rounds total per match
  • When the match starts, the timer gives you 40 seconds to win the round
  • If after 40 seconds there is no winner, a flag appears on the map. Players have to run to the flag and defend it for 3 seconds to secure the win.
  • If no one can defend the flag within the new time limit, the round will end and the team with the most total health left wins
  • There is 100 health per player, combined for 200 health between the two players
  • You do not heal in this mode and auto-health regeneration is disabled for this mode. The health amount is set.
  • The top of the screen shows the combined health per team, allowing you to see how much damage you have done and how much health your team has left.

Impressions

As mentioned above, we had a chance to play and checkout this mode at Infinity Ward back in May. For those of you who loved Face-Off in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, this mode is for you. It’s the perfect mode for those grudge matches to take on friends in a 2v2 action.

This mode has set classes already, so all players are on the level playing field and have an equal opportunity at winning from just the arsenal available. There’s no opportunity to create your own class going in to Gunfight, which may be a negative aspect for some players, but having set classes really tests the skills of each player’s ability with all of the weapons. During our play session, there were random set ups given — going from pistols to rocket launchers to use.

Playing the mode at Infinity Ward, it’s clear that this mode is designed to be a fun, hectic gameplay that fans can play when taking a break from the traditional MP experience that the title offers. And it’s designed to have maps that are separately built for this mode only, which again adds more content to the overall game experience — similar to what Face-Off did for Modern Warfare 3. Face-Off allowed for 1v1, 2v2, or 3v3, but Gunfight is only 2v2 which works for the mode.

Infinity Ward did not answer a question on the total maps available in the game overall across MP, but there’s 3 Gunfight maps confirmed for now.

Gunfight is just a small portion of the entire MP Mode in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. It’s a single mode, and the focus of today’s reveal. One of the things you will notice is that the realism aspect discussed for the campaign mode for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare does carry over to MP as well.

And by the way, all of the NBA and NFL events you’ve seen this year where athletes were playing Modern Warfare, you only saw 2 players on a team because they were playing Gunfight.

The full reveal of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Multiplayer will take place on August 1 at 10AM PT.
