Call of Duty: Modern Warfare campaign to be ‘traditional’ Call of Duty campaign length

In an interview with GameReactorEU, Infinity Ward’s Studio Narrative Director has given a first indication of how long Call of Duty: Modern Warfare’s campaign will be.

According to the interview, the campaign will be ‘traditional’ Call of Duty campaign length, similar to past Infinity Ward Call of Duty campaign lengths. The time is subject to change, of course, as development continues of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.

“We’re still working on it, and every single tweak we make to it of the difficult or anything like that can really effect the gameplay time. So we’re not actually explaining what the gameplay length is. I’ll just put it this way, its traditional Call of Duty campaign length.

Previous Infinity Ward Call of Duty campaign times have been around 7-8 hours in length, some more than that, some less. It varies by each game and each game’s story so we will have to wait and see exactly how long Call of Duty: Modern Warfare’s campaign will be.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is available October 25.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare campaign has a collateral damage score, play-testers have been ’emotional’

In an interview posted by PCGamesN, some new details on how some aspects of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare’s campaign will work has been discussed.

One of the big ideas behind this year’s game is its realism and how it takes the world we live in and puts you into reality in many situations ‘ripped from the headlines.’ One of the aspects of this is in regards to collateral damage in the campaign. In previous games, if you killed too many civilians, the mission was failed.

In Modern Warfare, that does not happen as easily. This campaign will not stop the mission if civilians are killed. The characters around you will react to what you have done and change the overall mood of what’s happening, but the mission will not fail. Instead, at the end of the mission, it gives you a collateral damage rank, ranked from A through F for what you did in the mission.

Yeah, there are. Call of Duty has always had ‘friendly fire will not be tolerated’ warnings when you kill too many civilians. Obviously, we’re trying to make things much more realistic, much more visceral this time, so that if you kill a single civilian you feel bad, because you might see a woman go for a gun but instead she’s going to grab her baby. We want you to feel bad, and the characters around you will respond and react to what you did, too.

On top of this, we also have a collateral damage score that we give you after each mission, a rank A through to F score. We talk about ‘unknowns’ – an NPC is an unknown until they prove whether they’re a threat or not. If you kill no innocents and you evaluate all unknowns correctly then you’ll end up with a rank A, and if you kill more than three you will get a rank F. There are rewards associated with being as accurate with your threat assessment as possible.

Beyond this, a big thing about Call of Duty: Modern Warfare’s campaign is how real and emotional it is and can be at some parts. We described some of our feelings about it in our impression posts here, but Infinity Ward — in this interview — stated that some playtesters who have played the game have actually ‘cried’ at some aspects of it.

Joel Emslie, Studio Art Director: It’s because of the weight and gravity we have now, I’ve never seen narrative in a Modern Warfare game like this narrative. The stories [of the original trilogy] were great for that time period, but I think the gaming community expects more now, it has to be more sophisticated, and from what I’ve seen it’s incredible, there’s a really great story driving this thing.

Jacob Minkoff, Campaign Director: We’ve had multiple playtesters cry.

JE: I thought it was a joke when they told me, and then I watched a video of it. It was a real human moment, and now I’m like, ‘I worked on a game that made someone cry.’

JM: To be making people feel emotions that deeply – we’re doing it.

Report: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Cross Play will work similar to Fortnite, based on input matchmaking

One of the biggest announces alongside the reveal of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare last week was that the game will support cross play between the platforms when it launches on October 25.

Since that announcement, there has been a lot of confusion and some inaccurate information about how exactly matchmaking will work with cross play. An Infinity Ward developer on Twitter has shared a link to a Forbes’ article to describe how exactly cross play will work in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.

Cross Play will work in this game similar to that of Fortnite. Players will be matched with other players across PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC that have similar input devices (using controllers). Cross Play will work between PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC, and if you are using a controller, you will be placed in lobbies with players using controllers.

And, similar to cross play games like Fortnite, in Modern Warfare, if you are on PS4 or Xbox One and team up with a player on PC using a keyboard and mouse, you will then be placed in lobbies with all players — regardless of input devices.

Here’s how Forbes describes it:

Fortnite-style “input matchmaking” will help avoid PC players stomping everyone, as is a common concern. You match with other players with your style of input, controller or M+K, and only go “out of your league” if you’re partied with a PC friend on console, which will get you into mainly PC games.

Activision’s official press release announcing the game only mentioned that “we plan for Modern Warfare to be played together across PC and console through cross-play support” but did not provide specifics exactly.

This is all subject to change as launch on October 25 approaches, so stay tuned.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare soundtrack to be composed by Sarah Schachner

Taylor Kurosaki, Studio Narrative Director at Infinity Ward, has confirmed via Twitter that Sarah Schachner will be returning to compose the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare official soundtrack.

Sarah Schachner is an American composer and musician who has worked on the scores of films, television series’, and video games. She is credited for her work on the soundtracks of many AAA titles, including previous Call of Duty installments such as Infinite Warfare and Modern Warfare 3. Outside of Call of Duty, Sarah has contributed to the soundtracks for Anthem, Far Cry, Assassin’s Creed, and more.

To choose just one track to listen to would be a crime. However, give Operation Black Flag from Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare’s OST a listen. You won’t be disappointed.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare’s campaign will feed into its co-op mode

Hey, did you hear? Call of Duty: Modern Warfare won’t have a zombies mode.

Of course, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 didn’t have zombies modes either — that’s mainly been Treyarch’s jam ever since World at War 11 years ago. Ghosts (2013) had an Extinction mode with alien enemies, and Infinity Ward put zombies in 2016’s Infinite Warfare. Otherwise, zip for the undead from them, and none in this particular arc.

What Modern Warfare 2 will have, according to PlayStation Lifestyle, is a “single-player storyline that goes directly into the co-op storyline. No stop.” That’s according to Jacob Minkoff, the director in charge of the main campaign. And that is interesting. It sounds like a departure from the popular Survival co-operative mode offered in 2011’s Modern Warfare 3 (God, how time flies) in which two players fought off waves of enemies. But who knows, as Minkoff said they won’t be talking about co-op multiplayer until later. Modern Warfare launches at the end of October.

At any rate, Minkoff explained that Zombies just don’t fit with the milieu of Modern Warfare. Given Nazis’ history as sci-fi villains in pop culture, they sort of fit for World at War and WWII, and as a campy, grindhouse-themed spinoff in the Black Ops line (who could forget defending a bunker with Nixon, JFK and Robert McNamara, after all). But not in Modern Warfare, because “we’re trying to create an authentic, realistic feeling world,” Minkoff said.

Makes sense. We have some quibbles with whether that’s a good approach to something that, in gameplay and appeal, has been a casual fan’s shooter for quite some time. But Minkoff is right that’s the player expectation set by the Modern Warfare treatment going back to its landmark debut in 2007 — and this will be a series reboot.

Anyway, no zombies in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, that’s confirmed.

Infinity Ward E3 Coliseum Panel takes place June 11 at 3PM PT

As announced earlier in May, Infinity Ward will be hosting a panel at E3 Coliseum to talk about Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.

Now, E3’s official website has posted the schedule of E3 Coliseum events happening, and it has confirmed that the Infinity Ward panel will take place on Tuesday, June 11 at 3PM Pacific / 6PM Eastern. The panel is expected to last for 30 minutes.

The panel is expected to have more details on the game’s campaign, but Infinity Ward has not officially confirmed what they will discuss during the panel.

The panel will be available to watch live on E3’s Facebook page.

Activision does not have their own booth at E3 this year, so there is not expected to be any hands on related stuff for Call of Duty at E3. And since Call of Duty is still partnered with PlayStation for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, there’s no PlayStation conference happening at E3, so there’s no conference where new details could be released beyond this one panel.

Infinity Ward confirms Call of Duty: Modern Warfare will not have a Zombies mode

Infinity Ward has confirmed in an interview with PlayStationLifestyle that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare will not have a Zombies mode, marking one of the first times in the last several years that a Call of Duty game will be skipping a Zombies mode.

Infinity Ward’s Campaign Director, Jacob Minkoff, stated that the decision behind no Zombies mode was because they want the entire game to feel like one game (not three separate modes), and you can’t have a modern, real story and then have a Zombies co-op mode in the game as well.

“But for us, we’re trying to create an authentic, realistic feeling world. We don’t have the flexibility to do something like put zombies in the game. That would compromise the feeling of playing in a world that feels realistic and authentic and relative to today’s conflicts and things we face.”

Infinity Ward revealed yesterday that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare’s unified experience will let progression and many aspects be shared across the game’s campaign, multiplayer, and co-op mode.

Minkoff also revealed that the single player story will tie into the co-op mode.

“We’re not ready to talk about cooperative play yet, but what I will tell you is that the single-player storyline goes directly into the co-op storyline. No stop. The events just continue. So those elements—gameplay, progression, story—they just continue throughout everything that we have on the disc or digital download.”

There’s not much details on the exact information as to what the co-op mode will be. The game’s description was revealed and claimed the co-op mode would feature ‘elite operations’ for players to fight through.

Report: Polygon article claims John “Soap” McTavish will return in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is a fully reimagining of the Modern Warfare series that was released years ago for Call of Duty, but Infinity Ward is bringing back some fan favorite characters, reimagined, for this game.

The trailer confirmed the return of Captain Price for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare with his iconic look, but Infinity Ward did not showcase other characters that could be returning to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.

Polygon, in their in-depth article from their time at Infinity Ward, states that John “Soap” McTavish is also returning in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.

While the game will bring back Tier 1 operators, including SAS operatives Captain John Price and John “Soap” McTavish, both reimagined for Modern Warfare, we’ll also see how war affects rebels and freedom fighters from their first-person perspective.

Infinity Ward only mentioned to us during our time that Price was back and declined to comment on any other characters return for now, so we’re not sure if this was meant to be revealed by Polygon yet.
