Call of Duty: Modern Warfare rated MA15+ in Australia

The Australia Classifications board has officially rated Call of Duty: Modern Warfare on their website ahead of the game’s October 25 launch.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare will be rated MA15+ in Australia, a rating that previous Call of Duty titles have had, but may come as a surprise given the intensity of the game’s settings and themes in regards to the campaign.

The Australia ratings board says the game has “Strong violence and war themes, and online interactivity.”

Here’s the overview of the ratings:

The full ratings listing is available on the Australia Classification site here. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare joins many of the other Call of Duty games, including the original Modern Warfare series getting a MA15+ rating.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 3, in 2015, was the first Call of Duty game in Australia to get the R18+ rating.

Infinity Ward to add more clarity to Gunsmith options in Modern Warfare

One of the big complaints coming out of the Modern Warfare Beta in regards to Gunsmith feature in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is the lack of clarity over the items you can unlock for each weapon.

When you first select a level one weapon to use in Gunsmith, it only shows a selection of features to pick from — Muzzle, Optic, Stock, Perk, etc — but each weapon actually as a variety of selections beyond just those four. If you really level up the weapon, you get to pick the weapon’s Muzzle, Barrel, Lasers (varies per weapon), Stock, Perk, Grip, Magazine, and Underbarrel, but the current UI does not actually show all of that at first.

In addition, in each of the categories only one item is shown at first, and there’s no indication as to how many items there actually are in each one.

Infinity Ward has responded on Twitter to state that they will be working to add more clarity to ensure players know what each weapon has in Gunsmith.

Infinity Ward Senior CM also said on Twitter that they’re working to ensure weapon unlocks are noted clearer for launch.

Gunsmith allows players to customize and build out their weapons in a variety of ways never before seen in Call of Duty history.

Modern Warfare Killstreak menu reveals first look at new map

The killstreak menu for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare has revealed a very first look at a new unannounced map for the game.

Under the killstreak “Infantry Assault Vehicle,” an option in the top right says which maps this vehicle is available to use on.

The map is called Karst River Quarry.

This map has not been revealed yet for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. It could possibly be the Ground War map for the game, as the Infantry Assault Vehicle is a very large vehicle set for the big maps in the game.

Here’s the full image via iMirraz:

The Ground War mode, which is set to support up to 64 players, is expected to be in the Beta at some point.

Extra ‘Realism’ Makes For A Slow-Paced Modern Warfare Beta

Screenshot: Activision

Activision kicked off Call of Duty: Modern Warfare’s multiplayer beta yesterday, letting PlayStation 4 players get hands-on with a softly rebooted Modern Warfare focused more on realism.

Following up on last month’s alpha for Modern Warfare’s upcoming 2v2 Gunfight mode, the beta offers a taste of the standard multiplayer with 6v6 and 10v10 matches in game modes that Call of Duty players are familiar with. Team Deathmatch and Domination serve as the staple modes, while Headquarters returns to serve as the King of the Hill-style mode that requires teams to fight and capture certain “headquarters” locations on the map.

Today, day two of the beta, added a new tactical objective mode. In “Cyber Attack,” players must fight for possession of an EMP device with the objective of planting the device at the opposition’s data center. Similar to Search and Destroy, players only have one life per round, and there is a diffuser that can be defused before a timer runs out.

This can feel a little more hectic than a standard match of Search and Destroy, because wounded players can enter a knocked-out state and have a chance to be revived. The device needs to be detonated, or all players eliminated, to win the round. The first to win five rounds takes the match.

At first, seeing the maps, modes, and guns offered in the beta gives me those old-school Modern Warfare vibes. But Infinity Ward’s desire to push for more realism causes those feelings to end as soon as the match starts.

I’ve previously voiced my concerns over the lack of a mini-map in Modern Warfare’s core multiplayer. After getting hands-on with the beta, I strongly believe the pace of the game suffers without one. Much of the gunfights and rushing that players enjoy and expect from Call of Duty’s standard multiplayer is slowed down to overly cautious camping.

The beta maps also cater to camping, with myriad buildings and doors that now open and close. The “Grazna Raid” map is a clustered city perfect for getting shot in the back because there was someone lurking behind a door or in a dark corner. Being able to open and close doors is an option that will take some adjustment. On several occasions, I pushed through a building and got shot in the back because I thought the interior door I just passed was the usual fake decor. In reality, a camper was roasting marshmallows in the other room, heard my footsteps, and opened the interior door just in time to ruin my killstreak.

Flying solo with a team of noobs means that you’re not likely to get many killstreaks, and UAV streaks now matter more than ever since the temporary mini-map that they grant feels so crucial. Reintroducing the mini-map for standard multiplayer would motivate players to move around more, thus improving the pace of the matches and the overall feel of how these maps play.

Keeping with the theme of “realism,” Modern Warfare’s “Operators” are customizable soldiers who don’t have any wacky superpowers or weapons like the Specialist characters of most recent Call of Duty games. The characters themselves are simply cosmetic tweaks, so no robots with miniguns or dudes with overpowered tasers.

However, there are “Field Upgrades” that serve as a chargeable item or ability that can be equipped to any character. These upgrades are sensible additions to a modern Call of Duty, with options like ammo drops and a deployable ballistic cover that you mount for extra protection.

Modern Warfare’s Gunsmith offers a more visualized way to customize your gun, and the game is boasting a ton of attachment options. Day one of the beta had a level cap of 10, so there aren’t currently enough options unlocked yet. I’m not quite sure how daunting this will feel to new players. You can have five attachments on your gun at any given time, but there are pros and cons to each of them. Changing up one attachment could have a bigger impact on your weapon that it did in previous Call of Duty games.

One thing I appreciate about Modern Warfare is the ability to adjust my loadouts during the match. I always felt like Call of Duty was stuck in the dark ages of forcing players to edit their attachments between matches, while Battlefield games spoiled me with mid-match adjustments. I am always that irresponsible player that complains during matches that I forgot to change my loadout. To be fair, my friends also suck at reminding me.

The guns of Modern Warfare look and sound great. I had major complaints about the sound levels in the Gunfight alpha. I could barely hear footsteps, for example, and I wasn’t the only one. Infinity Ward used the feedback to make some adjustments. Personally, the footsteps sound great for me this time around and remain consistently audible. However, I did see a few complaints that players weren’t hearing sounds properly in the beta, so all the issues don’t seem to be worked out yet.

Also, there were issues partying up with friends on day one of the beta, but it seems to be a little more reliable on day two.

Overall, Call of Duty’s return to a modern setting shows promise for next month’s release, but some decisions made for the push towards realism are frustrating some of the core player base and affecting the flow of standard multiplayer. I really hope Infinity Ward won’t sacrifice replayability for realism, because the game gets boring when the pace suffers. Please add the mini-map back.

The early access beta is available now on PlayStation 4 for anyone who preordered a copy. An open beta, also restricted to PlayStation 4, will run from September 14 to 16. Cross-play testing will begin during the early access period for Xbox and PC from September 19 to 20, and the beta will be open to everyone on the final run from September 21 to 23. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare will be released on October 25.

Gestures and Sprays to return in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare

Gestures and Sprays will be returning in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, according to an Activision Games Blog post.

The Activision Blog has a guide to the entire controller layouts for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, and how and what each button on the controller is used for in the game for PS4 Beta.

As part of this, the blog has noted that the Down D-Pad button on PS4 will be used for Gestures and Sprays in the game.

D-pad Down – Gesture/Spray: This enables a chosen hand gesture or spray.

Infinity Ward has not provided a full overview of the cosmetic loot items that will be available in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare at launch. The studio said they’ll share more about those plans ‘when they’re ready.’

A glitch in the Modern Warfare Beta has revealed that Supply Drops could be returning to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. Some players were greeted with a ‘Common Supply Drop’ placeholder under unlocks in the After Action Report on the PS4 Beta.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Beta not available in Russia on PS4

Many Call of Duty fans in Russia have noticed that when the Modern Warfare Beta went live on PS4 this week, there was no beta option for them to download.

Russian PSN Users who had even redeemed a pre-order on the PSN Store were not able to download the beta, and Sony canceled many pre-orders and said that the Beta may not be available for reasons not mentioned.

We reached out to Activision for a comment, and an Activision spokesperson sent the following statement:

“Unfortunately Sony Interactive Entertainment is unable to support the Modern Warfare Beta on PS4 in Russia this weekend. Additional information will be shared as it becomes available. This does not affect our Beta plans on other platforms next weekend.”

Activision says the beta will still be available for Xbox One and PC next weekend, but it is not supported on PlayStation for some reason. That reason remains unknown at this time.

Sony Support has reportedly told users in Russia that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare will not be sold on the PlayStation 4 Store in Russia, and pre-orders are being canceled. Local Russian site states that they are hearing that the entire game will not be sold on PlayStation 4, but may still be available on Xbox One and PC. The site claims that the way the game is portraying the Russian federation is under scrutiny right now, but we are unable to verify those.

Activision only mentioned that the Beta is not available on PS4, and has not stated if the full game will be available in Russia at this time. We will update if we hear more.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Early Access PS4 Beta – Day 1 Recap

Day 1 of the Early Access PlayStation 4 Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Beta is wrapping up, and Infinity Ward has shared on Reddit a recap of the day, including what they’re looking into after Day 1 and more.

The studio is looking at the feedback from the fans on the no mini-map situation, working to fix a lot of the bugs including the Parties having to be disbanded, and a look at what’s coming during Day 2 of the Modern Warfare Beta on PS4.

FROM INFINITY WARD:

Post image

It’s been an incredible first day of the Beta and we couldn’t do any of this without you, our community. Beta testing is so helpful to us as developers. Sometimes you all find bugs we haven’t run into yet, provide suggestions that spark ideas within various teams across the studio, and of course…seeing you Nuke a lobby will never get old! As we head into the weekend, we want to say THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU to everyone who has been playing today and who plans on joining over the weekend. We’re here, reading and listening to your feedback, so keep it coming!

Let’s take a look at what’s to come!

Feedback We’re Looking Into:

We’re reading all of your feedback across social media, so even if you don’t see your issue listed below, please know that we’re tracking everything. Below are some issues and feedback we’re seeing…

  • Partying Up: After completing a match as a party, some players are unable to find a new match and are stuck in the matchmaking lobby. We’re still looking into this issue, but in the meantime, disbanding your party and joining back up is a temporary solution while we work on a fix.
  • Unable to connect to online services: This is currently being investigated. If you are still running into this issue, please feel free to PM me your PSNID (if you aren’t comfortable posting it in a thread) so we can take a deeper look. This will be helpful as we work on a solution.
  • Connecting your PSNID to your CallofDuty.com account/Display name in-game: Please check this link provided by Activision Support if you’re having issues with connecting accounts or would like to adjust your display name. You can learn how to do this here: https://www.reddit.com/r/modernwarfare/comments/d3ei14/activision_account_display_names_in_the_modern/
  • Hearing enemy footsteps, team footsteps, and your own: Tell us how you’re listening to the game. You can be specific by telling us some of the following information: What type of heaphones are you using? Speakers? Monitor? TV? What preset are you currently using? Are you plugged in directly to the controller? This information can help us narrow down what you’re hearing and help us look further into any issues.
  • Calling Cards using wrong name and/or flag description: The description for the flag of Colombia currently says “Columbia.” The Slovakian flag is currently labeled Croatia. Both of these will be fixed during weekend two of the Beta.
  • Players are able to clip into a table on Grazna Raid: A fix for this has already been completed and will be implemented as soon as possible.
  • Level Cap displaying a higher level than 10: Right now, the level cap is set to 10. Some players are seeing their level cap display 11 or higher. This is a visual bug and will be fixed in weekend two.
  • Graphical corruption on the matchmaking screen: Some players experienced graphical corruption errors while in matchmaking, resulting in the screen appearing black, green, or yellow. This will be fixed in weekend two of the Beta.
  • Spawns: You all have provided tons of feedback and videos of spawns needing some attention. We see it on our end too as we play with you all online, so we’re looking into the current spawn system and will continue to monitor as we go through the weekend.

Okay….let’s talk about minimap.

We hear you loud and clear. Along with your feedback and the data we’re continuously collecting, we’ll be experimenting internally with a few different options and will keep you updated if we make any changes that you might see during the Beta. This is an ongoing conversation with all of you, so again, thank you so much for sharing your thoughts on this topic and we’ll update you again when we have more information to share.

UPCOMING BETA CONTENT:

In addition to what you played today, tomorrow, you’re going to get your hands on a new 6v6 map, Gun Runner. We’re also swapping in a new mode in the featured playlist, Cyber Attack! Check back tomorrow for more info on Day Two and again, thank you so much for playing and we’ll see you online!

Modern Warfare Beta to feature the Ground War mode with 64 players

Activision’s new press release announcing the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Beta has confirmed some new details on what to expect with the Beta.

The press release has mentioned that new content will be added to the beta every day that the beta is live in-game.

Modern Warfare Beta will deliver a deeper look at Modern Warfare’s multiplayer universe, including tight close-quarter 2v2 Gunfight gameplay, traditional 6v6 Multiplayer and large-player count experiences on massive maps featuring a wide array of vehicles. The Beta will expand in Weekend 2 to include all platforms, and for the first time in Call of Duty history, feature crossplay, with fans across console and PC able to play the Modern Warfare Beta together prior to next month’s launch.

The press release has now also confirmed that the Ground War mode will be available playable at some point during the beta with a limit of 64 players.

The Beta test will feature a suite of new multiplayer modes that redefine the Call of Duty sandbox, ranging from the close-quarter frenetic 2v2 Gunfight, up to and including the epic large-scale Ground War mode supporting up to 64 players, night gameplay maps, and the fully immersive Realism mode.

“With Modern Warfare, we’re bringing the gaming community together like never before. Starting with the beta we are going to be soliciting player input and feedback that will help us to polish and refine the Day One experience at launch,” said Patrick Kelly, Creative Director and co-Studio Head, Infinity Ward. “Starting this weekend we’re planning to give players access to new features and maps each day. Then next weekend, we will introduce crossplay, enabling players to connect with friends and other gamers across platforms. We are also planning to expose more new content and ways to play in the second weekend. In all, we can’t wait for the community to jump in both weekends.”

The Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Beta is now live in Early Access on PlayStation 4. The Beta for the second weekend will debut Cross Play between PS4, Xbox One, and PC starting September 19.

Stay tuned.
