GameInformer interviews Infinity Ward on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Development – Campaign, Origins, And More

GameInformer has shared a video today featuring Infinity Ward’s Campaign Directors Jacob Minkoff and Taylor Kurosaki.

Here’s a summary what was talked about in the interview:

  • Ideas for 2019 game started before Infinite Warfare shipped in 2016
  • Patrick Kelly, IW Studio Head, voiced that they should make Modern Warfare again.
  • Taylor Kurosaki says he ‘grew found of Infinite Warfare’s character’ but put those aside to make Modern Warfare. He also says that those characters are still out there and will be ‘revisited’ in the future.
  • He says they will make Infinite Warfare 2 whenever the year Infinite Warfare took place actually comes around. Infinite Warfare ‘will be Modern Warfare at some point’
  • He says both Infinite Warfare and Modern Warfare “are about warfare.” Infinite Warfare was about being a “captain and figuring things out on the fly.” But “Modern Warfare has the burden of being the protector.” “You carry the burden with you” in Modern Warfare.
  • On why it is a MW reboot and not MW4: “We talked about it a bunch.” “We basically landed pretty quickly that if we made a sequel we would have to be telling a story that continues on from Modern Warfare 3.” The ending of MW3 left a lot of stakes that were not relatable anymore, so it could not be realistic. And so many people did not get a chance to play the originals and would have to be caught up on all the aspects of the game.
  • What makes it Modern Warfare is that it is a modern game that has events that can happen. “We had too reboot.”
  • “We have a lot of other returning characters as well” but “new re-imagined versions of those characters.”
  • “We talked about some radical casting ideas for the characters.”
  • There is enough differences that it is not the same original Modern Warfare story and overall feeling to the actors makes it new and modern.
  • “We do not want to spoil who comes back.”
  • The experience designing this game has been “awesome.” The team has “evolved and grown” with “new blood and old blood.” “The team making the game is truly like a squad. We fight together. We care so much about this thing.”
  • “This has been the easiest development of my career because of how energized people have been towards the same goal” – Minkoff, who has worked on many games over his career.
  • “We had one level that was not testing very well. It did not have the player agency, but it just did not have the gameplay core. And this one designer was like this is not working and he went and ripped everything apart and basically made it open world, many different overlapping paths, all sorts of new weapons you can find…like he drastically changed it. This is everything. Having people like that, who throw themselves in it by making the game so much better, moments like that are absolutely priceless.”
  • “This game is a game that is more authentic.”

In this exclusive Game Informer interview, Infinity Ward’s campaign gameplay director Jacob Minkoff and studio narrative director Taylor Kurosaki talk about leaving Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare behind, why they didn’t choose to create a Modern Warfare 4, and why you can expect more characters than just Price to return to the reboot.

Players can edit their loadouts in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare during a match

One of the new features in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare that practically all Call of Duty games have stayed away from was being able to edit classes during a match.

With Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, Infinity Ward will be adding that feature into the game, allowing players to change their attachments and weapons during a match.

“For years we thought that if someone was able to edit their Loadout in-game they would be AFK, but with so many different attachments, it’s fun to switch out the stuff on the fly. Everybody scoffed at it when we first said we wanted to put it in, but it feels so good when you quickly change to a different attachment depending on the situation. Instant gratification!”

Players are now able to change up their weapons if they feel that some class isn’t working for the current match style, especially with the 100 player+ Ground War mode.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare features a mechanic to fire your weapon while on a ladder

In the MP Reveal Trailer for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, you may have noticed that there’s a scene where the character is climbing up the ladder and turns around and fires the weapon at an enemy.

That mechanic was not fully tested out during our hands-on event in LA with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, but Infinity Ward’s MP Design Director has confirmed on Reddit that there is in fact the mechanic to fire your weapon while climbing a ladder in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.

Yes there is.

You can see it in the trailer at the 2:30 mark:

Gunfight in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare supports 1v1 and 3v3 in Private Matches

Infinity Ward’s Level Designer has revealed on Reddit that players can customize how they want to play Gunfight in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare in private matches with a variety of options.

The studio confirmed earlier last week that players are allowed to change up the pre-set classes in Gunfight in Custom Matches, so players can have all sorts of configurations while playing for fun with friends.

Now, they’ve confirmed that the game will support 1v1 and 3v3 player counts in Gunfight in Private Matches.

“The 2v2 maps support 3v3’s in custom match.”

He also confirmed that 1v1 match option is available in Custom Matches, joking that the 1v1 configuration is how debates are settled internally.

“Yup. It’s how we settle all debates here at IW.”

There’s no indication as of now if the studio will bring 1v1 and 3v3 to online play in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. Infinity Ward has plans for different configuration of classes for Gunfight post-launch.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Ground War mode will let you pick where to spawn

As part of the GameInformer Podcast show from this week, some additional information on the new Ground War mode in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare has been revealed.

Ground War in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is one of the biggest new additions to Call of Duty. GameInformer’s play session of the mode featured 32v32 players in a large Downtown map with open roads, buildings, vehicles, and more. Activision confirmed in their press release that the Ground War mode will actually support ‘more than 100 players,’ but a final player count has not been established by the studio yet.

In the podcast, GameInformer also revealed that in this new Ground War mode, players will be able to pick where they want to spawn — either on friendly captured domination flags or into areas where your teammates have controlled. This is not like Battlefield in that you will have ‘squads’ to spawn with, but you can spawn near teammates if you wanted.

“Ground War is a 5 cap domination essentially on a giant scale where you can spawn into any of your controlled areas. So spawn points can be any of those capped zones you have, or player controller APCs that are driving across the map while you jump into them.”

Activision has ‘largest post launch content pipeline’ planned for Modern Warfare

Activision Blizzard held their second quarter investor call today highlighting the business’s financial updates as the second quarter ended for the company.

As part of the call, Activision Blizzard’s Coddy Johnson, President and COO, talked a bit about Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and their outlook for the rest of the year.

Johnson stated that the company has the ‘largest post launch content pipeline’ in place for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and that the company has surprises planned for the game, starting with the Open Beta in September.

One of the big changes with the post launch plan is that there’s no season pass anymore, instead focusing on free maps and other content that the company plans to add for the game.

In the QA section of the call, they reiterated that they are focusing on investing resources into the post launch content pipeline to build live services for their games, including Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.

The company wants to “build engagement over time” and “build one massive community” with Call of Duty.

A full overview of the post launch pipeline has not been announced.

Infinity Ward does not consider Modern Warfare to be a political game

GameInformer’s coverage of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare continues today with a short interview with Infinity Ward’s Campaign Directors Jacob Minkoff and Taylor Kurosaki.

GameInformer asked the developers if they think that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is a political game or not. The developers state that they don’t believe their game is political because it’s just taking themes from the real world into the game versus actually using real events inside the game.

“But the thing this, people read into that in different ways. That doesn’t mean anything, the question “is this a political game?” doesn’t actually mean anything because it is what does the world political mean to you. Do we touch topics that bare a resemblance to the geopolitics of the world we live in today? Hell yeah! Cause that is the subject matter of Modern Warfare.

He elaborated a bit and stated that current real world Presidents or governments are not in the game either.

Are we telling anything specific about any governments about the countries we are portraying? No. So if you’re asking, is Trump in the video game? No, he isn’t.

These are the types of questions that have been asking for 50 years. We do talk about concepts like colonialism, occupation, independence, and freedom. We don’t say those words specifically but those are the realms we are in.

He also said that they are not tapping into America’s politics in any way in this game.

It’s talking about concepts like, in a world, super powers eye for influence around the world. They rely on proxy allies that do their bidding. What happens when that support (funding, backing, and more) is abandoned or withdrawn? What happens to the local people then?

Minkoff states that the game takes themes from the real world but does not actually bring up political topics that exist today.

Rumor: Modern Warfare Battle Royale mode to come in early 2020, will be free to play

A new rumor floating around from some people is that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare will in fact have a Battle Royale mode in the game, but with some exceptions.

The rumor, first reported by LongSensation, is that the Battle Royale mode in the game will be coming in early 2020 and will miss the October launch of the rest of the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare game.

The second part of the rumor is that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare’s Battle Royale mode is free to play and will be a separate download for the game, but it will still be integrated overall into the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare universe.

Activision has reportedly been internally discussing the possibility of a free to play component for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, per Kotaku’s article from May. The company has been trying to understand how to tap into the new market of free to play, but overall, the direction still has been the standard $60 game.

In another tweet, LongSensation stated that the intro screen for the BR mode will showcase Infinity Ward, Raven Software, and Activision logos.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare will launch on October 25 with the campaign, MP, and Spec-Ops mode. But beyond that, the Battle Royale mode has been up in the air in regards to what’s happening.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is being developed by multiple studios with Infinity Ward as lead. The game has High-Moon Studios, Beenox, and Raven all supporting the development of the game.

As always, this is just a rumor. Activision has not officially announced a Battle Royale mode for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.
